Ay ay ay! My Mexico City travel diaries are still taking over the blog…and this one is all about its people and culture.
First things first: I’m a transplant in New York from Texas, y’all (can you tell by my abundant use of that word? ๐ ) – so yes, I’ve definitely had to adjust from some heartwarming southern hospitality to some unnecessarily not-so-pleasant people that one typically encounters in NYC on a daily basis. This is what I’ve become used to now; this is the norm for me. I will say that I proactively never let the infamous “New York rude people aura” affect my daily positive spirit or happy outlook on life ๐
Needless to say…when I was in Mexico City, I was in for a great surprise filled with the happiest vibes. The amount of pride that the people have in their city’s culture is eye-opening. Also, every single person I encountered was an absolute delight to be around. Mexico City locals were kind, understanding and helpful: they didn’t look down upon my roommate and I for not being able to speak the language, and they suggested fun touristy spots for us to have a good time (adorably speaking excitedly in Spanish at a million miles a minute, so we may not have understood a word…but still!). The locals were extremely patient while we struggled looking up English to Spanish translations on Google, and would encourage us by telling us that our Spanish was “muy bueno”. I’m telling y’all – literally everyone went out of their way to show us kindness: waiters, ubers, street vendors, museum workers. It was so refreshing to experience the amazing people of Mexico City – I witnessed some of the most hardworking and humble people. Overall, this trip wasn’t like any other trip I’ve taken. The people of Mexico City reinforced sweet, simple reminders of what should really matter in life: appreciate what you have, and be kind to others.
