Howdy, friends! Haha totally kidding, I don’t greet anyone like that…BUT I thought it was a great opener for today’s blog post 🙂 Â As a lot of you know, I’m a Texas gal that moved to NYC 3.5 years ago! It’s been a crazy adventure for me – I remember when I first moved here back in 2015 I told myself that I was only going to stay here for 1-2 years max, to get ‘the New York experience’ and ‘live it up for a few years.’ Fast forward to 2019 and I have a good amount of friends here, great relationship, and amazing career. My family lives in Houston, and a ton of my besties are still in Texas, so of course I ALWAYS miss it and wonder when/if I’ll move back to the south. But the truth is, I have no idea! It’s funny how life pans out sometimes, huh?
Regardless, living in New York is definitely something else. Growing up, I’ve always dreamed of living here (never thought it would actually happen) – but it’s different than what you would imagine. Not in a good or bad way, just different. Here’s what the fur-real truth is, living in New York as a Texan:
- People call me out for saying y’all. So funny – I say y’all literally ALL the time, but those that aren’t from the South think it’s hilarious for some reason.
- Walking is a thing. It’s so funny when my Texas friends who are used to driving everywhere visit me in New York… “wait…we’re WALKING THAT FAR?” Sometimes I forget how much I walk and how used to it I’ve gotten, but hey…I think it’s kept me in shape over the years 😉
-  My patience…has dwindled. One of my weaknesses is I’m pretty impatient now – and I’ll admit it too. I can’t stand if people are walking slow in front of me, and I can’t stand it when my Uber takes more than 2 minutes to arrive. Definitely need to work on this, but it’s difficult 😛
- Say goodbye to amazing Tex-Mex. Unfortunately it’s hard trying to find some good quality Mexican food in the city! New Yorkers are all like…”Queso? What’s that?!” I can’t complain about all the other delicious cuisines you can find in the city though 🙂
- Life = go, go go. The fast paced life is a real thing y’all – but I love it! I always have something to do, somewhere to be, or someone to see. I like staying busy and I feel weird if I don’t have anything planned…(although I guess it is nice sometimes!).
- New York prices are cray. Definitely miss those Texas prices… hello #brokelife. BUT somehow I feel like I’ve just gotten used to all the expenses and come up with creative ways to save.
- Meeting up is a commitment. Living in the Upper East Side is nice, but far away from a lot of the more ‘happening’ areas where majority of people tend to live. Planning ahead has been key!
- Living in the fashion capital of the U.S. is hard when my room is my closet. I will forever wish I had more space for my clothes! As a fashion blogger, living in a small space can be so tough sometimes. I guess it forces me to embrace my Marie Kondo ways?
- So many visitors! I loooove this though! I’m pretty sure all my non-New Yorker friends have visited me at least once since I’ve moved here, and weekends are so fun!
- Homesickness is a thing, but don’t get me wrong…I LOVEEEE NYC so much. I miss my family & friends like CRAZY – literally think about them every day – but I do love this city so, so much. It’s incredible…and has been an amazing journey so far. If not Texas, there’s nowhere else I’d rather live than here.Â
